Kellogg Canada Takes Cholesterol to Heart with new ALL-BRAN* GUARDIAN*
|
TORONTO, ON, October 25, 2006 Kellogg Canada targets heart health with the launch of All-Bran* Guardian* - a great-tasting cereal with 3.5 grams of psyllium fibre per serving in a maple-brown-sugar flavour. Psyllium fibre is one of nature's highest sources of soluble fibre and has been proven to lower blood cholesterol, and ultimately, the risk of heart disease.
According to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition, consuming cereal with three grams or more of psyllium fibre each day as part of a healthy diet can help reduce blood cholesterol levels up to 10 per cent in as little as four weeks in those individuals with elevated cholesterol levels.
"A one cup serving of All-Bran* Guardian* cereal contains 3.5 grams of psyllium fibre, making it an excellent choice as part of a heart-healthy breakfast," says Johanne Trudeau, Director, Nutrition, Kellogg Canada. "All-Bran* Guardian* cereal and All-Bran* Buds are the only cereals in Canada that contain psyllium fibre and can help lower high blood cholesterol levels when used as part of a healthy diet."
Each one per cent drop in blood cholesterol can reduce the risk of heart disease by two per cent. Therefore, lowering blood cholesterol by 10 per cent could reduce the risk of heart disease by an average of 20 per cent. Statistics show that 48 per cent of men and 43 per cent of women in Canada have elevated blood cholesterol levels, which may be putting them at risk for heart disease and stroke - the leading cause of death and disability in Canada.
"High blood cholesterol is an important indicator for heart disease," says Johanne Trudeau. "Canadians can take an active role in reducing their risk of heart disease by knowing and controlling their cholesterol levels, and eating cereal with psyllium fibre like All-Bran* Guardian* every day, as a part of a healthy diet."
In addition to containing 3.5 grams of psyllium fibre, each one cup serving of Kellogg's All-Bran* Guardian* contains six grams of total fibre, making it a very high source of fibre. It is low in fat and saturated fat, trans-fat free and a source of 10 essential vitamins and minerals. And with a maple-brown-sugar flavour, this whole-grain puffed-toasted-O's-and-heart-shape cereal is a delicious part of a nutritious breakfast.
Kellogg's* All-Bran* Guardian* cereal is available in grocery stores across Canada and retails for approximately $5.49/305g box.
