“I'll invest my money in people” W. K. Kellogg
Founded in 1906, the Kellogg Company is the world's leading producer of ready-to-eat cereal products. With headquarters in Battle Creek, Michigan, Kellogg expanded operations to Canada in 1924 and today has 35 manufacturing facilities in 20 countries on six continents and distributes products to 160 countries.
It all started back in the late 1800's at the Battle Creek Sanatorium — a combination hospital and health spa for the elite and famous where Dr. John Harvey Kellogg was chief physician. Dr. John Kellogg and his brother, W.K. Kellogg wanted to offer something different from the nutritious yet tasteless bread on the sanatorium menu. They began experimenting by running boiled wheat through rollers in search of an alternative. When they were called away from their experiments and had to leave the cooked wheat exposed to the air for a day, the brothers decided to run the wheat through the rollers, despite the fact that it was no longer fresh. Instead of a single, large sheet of wheat that they had been producing, this time the rollers produced a flake for each wheat berry. When baked, they became a light and crisp flake. This flake, similar to breakfast cereal as we know it today, was first formed in 1894.
This new cereal, Granose, proved so popular with the patients at the sanatorium that many continued to request a supply, even after leaving. Inspired by the demand, the brothers started the Sanitas Food Company in 1898 to develop Corn Flakes cereal. W.K Kellogg, the general manager of the company, discovered that adding malt flavouring and using the grit or heart of the corn made the flakes even tastier! In 1906, W.K. Kellogg formed the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flakes Company, which was officially named the Kellogg Company in 1922, heralding the beginning of the ready-to-eat cereal industry.
In 1915, Kellogg's* Bran Flakes* cereal was added to the line, followed by Kellogg's* All-Bran* in 1916 and Kellogg's* Rice Krispies* in 1928.
Through the years, the Kellogg Company has continued to develop a world-class product line of nutritious, ready-to-eat cereals and continues to be the global leader. In addition to ready-to-eat-cereal, Kellogg Canada has expanded their product line which today includes Kellogg's* Pop-Tarts* danish and toaster pastries, Eggo* brand waffles and pancakes, Nutri-Grain* cereal bars and Rice Krispies Squares* marshmallow bars. Most recently, Kellogg Canada has entered into the Sports Nutrition market with VECTOR* Meal Replacement and VECTOR* Energy Bars, a nutritional supplement.
Today, Kellogg Company is divided into two divisions: Kellogg USA and Kellogg International (which includes Kellogg Canada, Kellogg Europe, Kellogg Asia-Pacific and Kellogg Latin America). Kellogg Company is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol: K.
